Description
Types and uses
- Eye ointment : 1% ointment used for bacterial conjunctivitis, trachoma and the prevention of neonatal conjunctivitis. It is often applied inside the lower eyelid.
- Skin ointment/cream: 3% cream or ointment for external skin infections. Apply once or twice a day.
- Oral tetracycline: Tablets or capsules for systemic infections (pneumonia, Lyme disease, etc.). Take with a large glass of water.
How it works (Mechanism of action)
- The antibiotic tetracycline works by binding to the bacterial ribosome (specifically the 30S subunit), preventing the bacterium from making essential proteins and therefore stopping its growth and reproduction.
Important points to consider
- Expired medicine : Do not use expired tetracycline; it can cause serious kidney problems.
- Drug interactions : May interact with other medicines, including oral contraceptives, and potentially reduce their effectiveness. Correct use: Always follow the doctor’s instructions, use clean technique for eye application and take oral forms with plenty of water.
