Active ingredient and use
- Methyldopa is the active ingredient of AMD 250 mg. It is used to treat high blood pressure and is particularly useful for high blood pressure during pregnancy because of its safety profile. It acts as a centrally acting alpha-2 agonist, relaxing the blood vessels and slowing the heart rate, although its exact mechanism of action is not fully understood.
Potential adverse effects
- Common adverse effects include drowsiness, headache, weakness and fluid retention. Serious adverse effects such as liver damage, blood disorders (such as a positive direct Coombs test), allergic reactions, heart problems and parkinsonism have also been observed.
