Tramadol injection

  • The injectable tramadol is a powerful, centrally acting opioid pain reliever, used in hospitals or clinics to treat moderate to severe pain, especially after surgery or a serious injury. It is given by a healthcare professional and must never be self-injected at home because of the risks of misuse, dependence and serious adverse effects.

Description

Key information

  • Uses : Tramadol injection is mainly indicated for the management of moderate to severe acute or chronic pain requiring continuous treatment, or when other pain-relief options have proven ineffective.
  • Administration : Tramadol is usually given by a doctor or nurse intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM). IV injections must be given slowly, over 2 to 3 minutes, to limit the risk of adverse effects.
  • Dosage : The dosage is adjusted to the patient’s condition and the intensity of the pain, usually 50 mg or 100 mg every 4 to 6 hours, without exceeding a total daily dose of 400 mg in most cases.
  • Mechanism of action : Tramadol works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, changing the perception of pain. It also inhibits the reuptake of noradrenaline and serotonin, which helps relieve pain. Onset of action: Pain relief usually starts 30 to 60 minutes after the injection and usually lasts 4 to 6 hours.

Common adverse effects

  • Most adverse effects are temporary and disappear as the body gets used to the medicine. Common adverse effects include:
  • Nausea and vomiting
    Dizziness and drowsiness
    Constipation
    Dry mouth
    Headache
    Sweating

Important warnings and precautions

  • Respiratory depression: Tramadol can cause serious, even fatal, breathing problems, especially when starting treatment or increasing the dose.
  • Dependence and abuse: Tramadol is an opioid and carries a risk of abuse, misuse and dependence, even at recommended doses.

Interactions : Do not drink alcohol or use other central nervous system depressants (such as sleeping pills or certain antidepressants) during tramadol treatment, as this may increase the risk of severe sedation and respiratory depression. Serotonin syndrome: A potentially fatal serotonin syndrome can occur when tramadol is combined with other serotonergic agents (for example, SSRI or SNRI antidepressants).

  • It is essential to discuss your medical history with your doctor before taking tramadol, especially any kidney or liver problems, mental health conditions or history of substance abuse.
