Description
Main features of a Foley 16 catheter:
- Size: 16 French (Fr), a diameter of about 5.3 mm.
- Color: Usually orange, for easy identification.
- Material: Can be latex (often silicone-coated for more comfort) or pure silicone.
- Lumens: Usually double-lumen (drainage channel and balloon inflation channel).
- Balloon: Often a 5 ml balloon, inflated with sterile water to hold the catheter in place in the bladder.
Directions : Common in adult women or small adult men; larger sizes (20 Fr and above) are for men or for draining clots.
How it works :
- A healthcare professional inserts the catheter into the urethra, past the neck of the bladder.
- The balloon is inflated with sterile water to keep the catheter in the bladder.
- Urine flows from the bladder, through the drainage channel, into a collection bag.
