Description
Types of tests
Home urine tests:
- How it works : Detect hCG in urine; available without a prescription.
- Reliability : About 97% reliable when used correctly after a missed period.
- When to take the test : For best reliability, it is better to test after the first day of a missed period, although some tests can detect pregnancy earlier.
Blood tests (at a doctor’s office):
- How it works : Detect hCG in the blood.
- Quantitative test (beta-hCG) : Measures the exact hCG level, can detect pregnancy earlier (about 10 days after conception) and track its progress.
- Qualitative test : Checks for the presence or absence of hCG, with reliability similar to a urine test.
How to get accurate results
- Read the leaflet : Always follow the specific instructions supplied with the test kit.
- Test at the right time : For home tests, wait at least until the first day of a missed period.
- First morning urine : Often recommended for home tests because it is more concentrated. Wait for the indicated time: Read the results within the specified time frame (for example, 3 to 5 minutes) and do not read them later.
What next?
- Positive result : Very likely correct; contact a healthcare professional for confirmation and to start prenatal care.
- Negative result : Repeat the test in a few days if your period still has not come.
If the result is still negative and symptoms persist: See your doctor; a blood test will confirm the result.
